If you run a Discord server for a streamer, or for a community that follows several of them, you want the same thing: a message in a channel the moment someone goes live. Here is how to set that up with Streamcord.
Add the bot
Invite Streamcord to your server. It needs permission to send messages and embed links in whichever channel your alerts will go to. If you are locking it down to a single channel, grant the permissions there rather than server-wide.
Create the notification
Run the setup command and pick the channel you want alerts in:
/notif twitch add
Streamcord asks for the Twitch username to follow and the channel to post in. That is the whole required configuration. The next time that streamer starts a broadcast, the alert appears.
Customize the message
The default alert works, but most servers want something of their own. You can change the message text, mention a role, and adjust what the embed shows:
/notif twitch edit
A few things worth doing while you are in there:
- Mention a dedicated role, not
@everyone. People who want alerts opt in, and everyone else is not woken up at 2am. - Put the stream title and game in the message. Followers decide whether to click based on what is being played, not on the fact that something is on.
- Keep it short. The embed already carries the thumbnail and the link.
When an alert does not fire
Two causes account for almost everything:
- The bot cannot post in the target channel. Check its permissions there specifically, including any category-level overrides.
- The stream was already live when the notification was created. Alerts fire on the transition to live, so a stream in progress does not retroactively trigger one.
If neither applies, the support server can look at the specific configuration.
